KYC and AML onboarding for your NIF-linked account. The bank often sets the strictest documentary bar, and it comes first.
Portugal Golden Visa · source of funds
Portugal Golden Visa source of funds for US investors.
Before the qualifying capital can move, three parties want to see where it came from: the Portuguese bank at onboarding, the fund at subscription, and AIMA in the residency file. Zoark helps US investors map that evidence trail early, so a missing document does not stall the application after the money has already moved.
Zoark helps you map and assemble source-of-funds evidence and coordinate the people who review it. It does not provide legal, AML, or US tax advice and does not guarantee approval. What ultimately satisfies a Portuguese bank, a fund, or AIMA is confirmed by your Portuguese lawyer and the institutions themselves.
What it means
What "source of funds" actually means here.
It is the documented trail showing that the money behind your qualifying investment was earned or acquired lawfully, and that you can prove each step from origin to the fund.
Two related ideas get used loosely, and both matter:
- Source of funds is the specific origin of the qualifying capital: the salary, sale, distribution, or inheritance that produced it.
- Source of wealth is the wider picture of how your overall assets were built, which a bank may ask about for context.
For a Golden Visa file, the goal is not just to state where the money came from. It is to evidence it with documents that a bank, a fund, and AIMA will accept, with a clean trail into the account the wire leaves from.
Who reviews it
Three reviews, not one.
The same money is examined by three different parties, each with their own standard. A trail that satisfies one can still leave gaps for another.
Subscription and the fund's own AML checks before it accepts your capital and issues units.
The residency file, where the qualifying investment and its lawful origin are evidenced as part of the application.
Document map
What to evidence, by where the money came from.
The right documents depend on the origin of the capital. These are the trails typically expected. Your lawyer confirms the exact set for your case and for the bank and fund involved.
Employment contracts, pay records, and tax returns that show income accumulating to the amount, plus the bank statements that hold it.
Sale and purchase agreements, company accounts, dividend or distribution records, and the receipt of proceeds into your account.
Brokerage statements showing the holding and the sale, contract notes, and the settlement landing in a traceable account.
The deed or closing statement, proof of prior ownership, and the proceeds arriving in your name.
The will, grant, or deed of gift, the donor's own source where required, and the transfer into your account.
A longer run of statements and tax records showing the balance built over time, which is often the hardest to evidence cleanly.
For US investors
What trips US investors up.
US-specific account structures and reporting add steps that a domestic applicant does not face.
- The wire path and FX trail. The money should leave a traceable account in your name; multiple hops between accounts make the trail harder to evidence.
- Retirement-account capital. IRA and 401(k) money raises custodian, valuation, and reporting questions before it can be used; see the IRA / 401(k) guide.
- Joint and spousal accounts. Ownership has to be clear, and a contributing spouse may need their own source evidence.
- Gifts from family. The donor's lawful source can be requested, not just yours.
- Crypto proceeds. Exchange records and the on and off-ramp trail are usually scrutinised closely and take longer to assemble.
- US tax reporting overlap. Source-of-funds evidence is separate from your US tax position; PFIC, QEF, FATCA, and FBAR are questions for a qualified US tax adviser.
Bring these
Questions to bring to your review.
A short list that surfaces gaps before they become delays.
- Which account will the qualifying capital be wired from, and is it cleanly in my name?
- Can I evidence each source that built that balance, with documents?
- Does any of the capital come from a gift, inheritance, sale, or retirement account that needs extra paperwork?
- What does the specific Portuguese bank and fund require, and how current must the documents be?
- Are translations or apostilles needed for any US-issued document?
- Is my US tax reporting on these assets handled with a qualified adviser?
How Zoark helps
Where Zoark fits, and where it does not.
Maps your source-of-funds evidence against what the bank, fund, and AIMA expect, flags gaps early, sequences the steps, and coordinates your Portuguese lawyer and the specialists.
It does not give legal, AML, or US tax advice, does not vouch for the lawfulness of funds, and does not guarantee that any bank, fund, or AIMA accepts a file.
Your Portuguese lawyer confirms what AIMA accepts; the bank and fund set their own AML bar; a qualified US tax adviser handles your reporting.
